Junior Teams Kick-Off 2020-21 Season

HOOKSETT, NH -- It's another busy week at the Ice Den, as this week's highlight comes from the junior teams that will be kicking off their 2020-21 campaigns this weekend.

For the two-time champions in the the Eastern Hockey League (EHL), the opening weekend includes a game against the Boston Junior Rangers on Friday at 1:10pm, as well as a matchup with the Maine Eclipse on Saturday at 4:20pm.

As for the Eastern Hockey League Premier (EHLP) team that saw their first season in the EHL's sub-division cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Avalanche will get back to work with a pair of matchups of their own against the Maine Eclipse. Saturday's contest will start after the EHL matchup, with puck drop set for 7:30pm. Following that game, the back end of the two-game set will take place on Sunday at 12:10 pm. The EHLP Avs will then stay busy with another game on Tuesday against the New England Wolves at 12:30 pm.

All five junior games will take place at the Ice Den.

Below you will find a breakdown of some of the youth action from this past week.

18U FS

The 18U Avalanche swept the opening showcase of the United Tier 1 Hockey League this past weekend. First year Av, Dante Massaro, led the offense by tallying three goals and two assists in the three-game weekend. All the while, another first year Av, goaltender Izak Giacchetto, shut the door with a shut out, and only three toal goals against over the weekend.

16U FS

The U16s had a successful second week of the season, picking up wins over the East Coast Spartans and the New England Wolves. The boys tied the Boston Imperials for the final game of the weekend.  The season should prove to be a good one with strong competition and opportunities for development.

18U Gold

The U18 Gold team hit the road this weekend with their first GSL game against the Northern Cyclones. Grady Chretien paced the offense with a hat-trick, but a last second goal for the Cyclones ended the game in a 3-3 tie.  On Sunday, the team traveled to Bedford, MA to take on the Wizards.  With an extremely short bench, the boys battled hard, but got another bad bounce that wound up in the back of the net in the 3rd period, resulting in a 1-0 loss in BHL play.

2010 Premier

The 2010 Premier team dug in and put out a strong effort for Sunday's parity game against the Boston Jr. Rangers 2010  Elite team. They came out with a loss, but it wasn’t without a lot of tough play. Griffin Watts #97 had a quick hands goal to start off the 3rd period.

2010 Elite

Our team went 1-1 on the weekend in parity, vying for a spot in the E9.  On Saturday, we played the Walpole Express.  Our team came out strong and continued that momentum throughout, with four goals and a shutout in the first two periods.  Walpole didn't go down without a fight, but the Avs defense fought harder, and the Avs came out with the win by the score of 4-2.  On Sunday, we played the Casco Bay Spartans.  It was a tough battle to the end, but unfortunately the Avs came up short, and were defeated 3-1.

 2009 Premier

The 2009 Premier team finished up the BHL parity with two hard fought games. The coaches are excited to see this team continue to work hard and grow in the game and in friendship. They finished off the weekend with a mean game of kickball and cake!

2009 Elite

Congratulations to the 2009 Elites on qualifying for the E9 Hockey League. With three wins and two ties under their belt, they went into the final Parity weekend being the team to beat. Defenseman, Alex May, set the pace of the game by scoring the first two goals. Colton Byars and Nolan Walsh, both forwards, scored to ensure a win over the Assabet Patriots. A 4-2 victory guaranteed the 09 Elites a spot in the premier youth hockey league that sees many highly skilled players from all over New England.

2007 Elite

The 2007 Elite team had a dominate finish to Parity last weekend going 3-0. First, they took on Valley Jr Warriors and fell behind early in the game twice, but battled back and picked up a 9-3 victory. All 3 lines contributed to the offense including a nice shorty by Tedy Hannon. Trevor Craigue also jumped into the action picking up some points ,while contributing on both ends of the ice.

Game 2 was a physical battle ending in a 6-3 victory for the Avs. The boys had to come from behind again and it was Justin Howell who grabbed his first goal of the season with a laser from the point through a great screen. That sparked the team for three goals in one minute of play, and four goals in the final five minutes of the 2nd period. Aidan Gile iced the game in the 3rd.

Game 3 was another physical battle where the boys fell behind yet again, only to battle back and take a commanding victory 8-2 over New England Knights. Jackson Chadwick picked up his first as a member of the Avs to get the ball rolling with assists to Casey Fuller and Brady Proulx. Hunter Lacroix started the play with a nice transition and breakout. Collin Leach picked up a nice assist from the point as the D shut-down their opponent the entire game. Stick-taps to Preston Libby who battled injury and played multiple positions to help a depleted defensive group get through this one.
